Bach in Arts - Bach Portrait

Art-1870

Type:

Bach Painting

Title:

Reconstruction of the Weydenhammer Portrait Fragment

Description:

All of my information was received from the website The Face of Bach. The author of that website, Teri Noel Towe, made a very good argument that this is indeed a lost portrait of Bach. His lecture about this painting is located at: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/thefaceofbach/QCL00.htm. The painting is designated as The Weydenhammer Portrait Fragment, c1733. The artist is unknown. See: Memo-1305
Eric Basta took the highest resolution jpg from that site that he could find and did some digital restoration on it himself - taking many more liberties than a professional restorer would not be able to take - i.e. he filled in large gaps in the painting with what he thought looked ok, and changed the color temperature by eye - not having any reference of true color whatsoever, etc. It is thus much more a home-brew restoration that developed from his own curiosity. He sent a copy of this to Teri Noel Towe and he wrote back and said he liked the job Eric Basta did very much and forwarded it the current owner of the fragment.
