Christoph Transchel was a German composer and keyboard teacher. He entered the Gymnasium in Merseburg in 1731 and was a pupil of Christoph Förster. He enrolled as a student of philosophy and theology at the University of Leipzig in 1742 (enrollment on June 21, 1742). He also studied privately with J.S. Bach while in Leipzig. In 1755 he established himself as a keyboard teacher in Dresden, where he died.
Christoph Transchel was first mentioned in 1782 in Forkel's Musikalischem Almanach without further comment as "J. Seb. Bachs Schüler" (J. Seb. Bach's pupil). Gerber's Lexikon from 1792 is more detailed during his time in Leipzig: "Als Musikbeflissener kam er nun bald in die Bekanntschaft des großen Joh. Sebast. Bach. Was ihm aber zu noch mehrererm Vortheile und noch größerer Ehre gereichte: er wurde dessen Schüler und Freund" (As a music-loving man, he soon came to know the great Joh. Sebast. Bach. But what gave him even more advantages and even greater honor: he became his pupil and friend). No statements are made about Transchel's teaching himself or from the time before J.S. Bach's death.
