Johann Schmidt (Organ)

Born: December 16, 1674 - Remstädt, near Gotha, Thuringia, Germany
Died: July 22, 1746 - Zella, Thuringia, Germany

Johann Schmidt worked from 1694 as organist in Zella. His son, Johann Christian Jacob Schmidt (C-15) succeeded him in this post..

Löffler's contradictory names Johann Schmidt as Bach's pupil, "Kunstfreund" (art lover) or simply contact person are based on Spitta, who mistaken him for the Harzgerode organist Johann Christoph Schmidt (B-3). J. Schmidt was much older than J.S. Bach and had been organist since 1694, so he could hardly have been a J.S. Bach's pupil. Nevertheless, he is of interest as a teacher of Johann Peter Kellner (C-14).
