Alfred Vökt (Tenor)

Born: May 21, 1926 - Basel, Switzerland
Died: June 14, 1999 - Basel, Switzerland

The Swiss tenor, Alfred Vökt, studied from 1945 to 1947 philology at the universities of Basel and Perugia; from 1950 to 1955 Law at the University of Basel and garduated with the the degree of Dr. Juristice. At the same time he received in Basel an intense musical and singing training and with Ernst Reiter (1948-1957).

From 1950 to 1958, Alfred Vökt sang in a choir in Basel. From 1955 to 1957 he was then engaged at the Stadttheater of Basel; in 1958-1959 at the Stadttheater of Gießen; from 1960 to 1962 at the Theater of Kiel at the Stadttheater of Oberhausen. From 1962 to 1965 he served on the Staatstheater Kassel, during this period he particpated in the premieres of the opera König Hirsch (Il Re Cervo) by H.W. Henze (October 3, 1963) and Abend, Nacht und Morgen by Ján Cikker (1963) in Kassel. In 1965-1966, he sang at the Opera House of Dortmund and since then for more than twenty years until 1992 (and then even as a guest) at the Opera House of Frankfurt a.M. As a guest, he performed at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf, Duisburg, at the Theaters in Bremen and Gelsenkirchen at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, at the operas of Bordeaux, Nice and Toulouse, in Paris and at the Edinburgh Festival. In 1986 he took part at the Opera House in Frankfurt in the world premiere of Stephen Climax by Hans Zender. His extensive stage repertoire included both lyrical, buffo and character roles.

Alfred Vökt had and extensive repertoire also in the was in the concert hall, in thearas of oratorio and Lidere singing. He later lived in his hometown of Basel.
