Margaret Tobias (Mezzo-soprano, Contralto)

Born: 1921 (?) - Hungary
Died: 1959 - New York City, New York, USA

The Hungarian-born Amrican mezzo-soprano/contralto, Margaret Tobias, graduated from Harding High School in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, in 1938, and in 1944 received her Bachelor of Music Education from Oberlin College. She attended New York’s Juilliard School of Music on a fellowship.

Margaret Tobias was one of the soloists of the Bach Aria Group (Director: William H. Scheide) for several seasons (1947-1951), and she gave concerts in Europe. She made her official debut in Town Hall, New York City in October 1955. She then performed as a soloist in Europe, South America and the USA. She died at the age of 38 at her home in New York City in 1959.
