Stuttgarter Philharmoniker (Symphony Orchestra)

Initially founded: 1924 - Stuttgart, Germany
Re-founded: 1945 - Stuttgart, Germany

In 1994 Stuttgarter Philharmoniker (Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra) could celebrated its 70th anniversary. A year after its foundation the orchestra already gave the first live concert relay on German Radio. Its rapid artistic rise in the foundation years made possibly the engagement of such great conductors and soloists as Leo Blech, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Hans Knappersbusch, Fritz Kreizler, Carl Schuricht and Felix Weingartner, before the orchestra was split up in 1933.

After the end of the war the musicians of the earlier Landesorchester came together again under the name of ‘Stuttgarter Philharmoniker’.

Today it is not only plays an outstanding role in the musical life of Stuttgart - it provides many concert series in its native city - but it is a welcome regular guest in many places in Germany and is engaged for concert tours throughout Europe. In 1987 the orchestra undertook an initial successful tour of America, in 1988 and 1992 two visits to Japan followed. In recent months the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker has made guest appearances in Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, Great Britain and France.
