Julius Prüwer (Conductor)
Born: February 20, 1874 - Vienna, Austria Died: July 8, 1943 - New York, NY, USA
The Austrian conductor, Julius Prüwer, studied piano with Friedheim and Moriz Rosenthal, and theory with R. Fuchs and Krenn; also profited greatly by his friendly association with Johannes Brahms. He studied conducting with Hans Richter. Julius Prüwer began his career as a conductor in Bielitz; then conducted at the Cologne Opera (1894-1896) and at the Breslau Opera (1896-1923), where he distinguished himself by conducting numerous new works. From 1924 to 1933 he conducted popular concerts of the Berliner Philharmoniker. In 1933 he was compelled to leave Germany owing to the barbarous racial laws of the Nazi regime; he conducted in Russia (including the first performance of Tristan and Isolde in 1898)) and in Austria; eventually reached New York, where he remained until his death in virtual obscurity.
