Born: Weil am Rhein, Germany
The German contralto, Silke Marchfeld, studied first transverse flute and early music at the Musikakademie in Basel. Later followed singing studies in Stuttgart, Basel and Amsterdam. Silke Marchfeld is finalist and prize-winner of numerous international competitions. In 1993 she was distinguished in Budapest with the Monteverdi prize.
Silke Marchfeld's concert activity leads her to many important music centres of Europe - among them the Opera House of Amsterdam, the Tonhalle Zürich as well as the Salzburg Festival. She has co-operated with Pierre Boulez, Brigitte Fassbaender, Christa Ludwig und Wolfgang Rihm, among others. Silke Marchfeld is involved intensively with new music. Several works ere composed particularly for her voice.
In 1997 Silke Marchfeld's first solo CD appeared. She can be heard as Edda in a new production of the Wagner ring.
