Päivi Järviö (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Finland

The Finnish mezzo-soprano, Päivi Järviö, obtained her Master of Music degree in Music Education from the Sibelius Academy In Helsinki (1983-1990); her Certificate in Early Music Singing from the Akademie für alte Musik in Bremen (1990-1992); and her Doctor of Music degree in Music Performance, Early Music from the Sibelius Academy (1994-2011). The focus of her doctoral thesis was on the embodied performing practice of Italian Early Baroque music. She was ORCiM Post doctoral researcher at Orpheus Institute (October 2011-December Dec 2012).

Päivi Järviö specializes in the singing (since 1989), researching (2000-2012) and teaching of Baroque and Renaissance music. She has performed as a soloist with Baroque ensembles and orchestras in Finland as well as abroad. She was a member of the Ring Ensemble of Finland. Her recordings include music by Claudio Monteverdi, Luigi Rossi, Henry Purcell, and Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco.

Further, Päivi Järviö coaches singers, choirs, ensembles and conductors. She was Teacher of Baroque music (vocal music, chamber music, and performing practice), teacher of academic work (written papers, projects) at Metropolia Helsinki Polytechnic (1999-May 2010). She is currently (since 1993) working as university lecturer and head of the DocMus Doctoral School at the Sibelius Academy (Uniarts Helsinki). She has worked as senior fellow at the Orpheus Institute (Gent). Her present research focuses on the embodied, present-day practice of performing so-called Early Music. She is also teacher of master-classes on early music performance for singers, ensembles, choirs and conductors (sionce 1994).
