İstanbul Oda Orkestrası (Chamber Orchestra)

Founded: 1961 - Istanbul, Turkey

İstanbul Oda Orkestrası (Istanbul Chamber Orchestra) was founded in 1961 by Dr. Hamit Alacalıoğlu. The orchestra gave numerous concerts and made live concert broadcasts at TRT Istanbul Radio with local soloists between 1961 and 1972. During lifetime of his founder Dr. Alacalıoğlu, the orchestra continued its concerts in Istanbul and made several tours to Anatolian cities. The orchestra revived under the leadership of Cihat Aşkın and Hakan Şensoy in 2001 and has become one of the most respected ensembles of the country with its concerts throughout the country. The Istanbul Chamber Orchestra, which performed more than 100 concerts between 2001 and 2009, supported young talented artists and gave 32 world premieres of the works by Turkish composers.

Istanbul Chamber Orchestra participated in the 31st Istanbul Music Festival with world-famous violin virtuoso Shlomo Mintz, also gave a concert to the world leaders at the 2004 NATO summit, was also invited to Germany, Albania, Bulgaria, Israel, Italy and Pakistan. A selection of 2 CD's, consisting of the concert recordings of the orchestra, was given as a gift to the readers of the magazine by Andante in 2008.

As a civil society orchestra, ICO is formed by the talented young musicians whose aim to create a unique sound and support the musical life of Turkey. Hakan Şensoy is the General Music Director of the orchestra. Some of the soloists and conductors whom the orchestra worked in the past listed as, Shlomo Mintz, Raphael Walfisch, Fazil Say, Cihat Aşkın, Tedi Papavrami, Peter Jablonsky, Bruno Schneider, Gülsin Onay, Emre Elivar, Keneth Hamilton, Suela Mulaj, Rengim Gökmen, Emin Güven Yaşlıçam, Hakan Şensoy, Michael Nebe, Ertuğ Korkmaz, Cem Mansur and Naci Özgüç.

Kurukahveci Mehmed Efendi Mahdumları and Pak Holding are among the supporters of the orchestra, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in the season of 2021-2022.
