Elma van den Dool (Soprano)

Born: Culemborg, the Netherlands

The Dutch soprano, Elma van den Dool, studied solo singing (1976-1981) and singing education (1981-1983) at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam; and continued her studies at the Hogeschool van de Kunsten in Utrecht, where she obtained the diploma Performing Musician (1990-1992). She studied with Erna Spoorenberg, Jelle Draijer, Henny Diemer and attended master-classes with Elisabeth Grümmer, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Arleen Augér between 1986 to 2013..

Elma van den Dool's repertoire includes oratorio, opera and Lieder as well as modern repertoire, with which she performs both at home and abroad. She sang Dvorak's Stabat Mater and Verdi's Requiem in San Malo and Düsseldorf; various oratorios in Italy, Luxembourg and Belgium. In her own country she regularly performs in J.S. Bach's Passions, Haydn's Schöpfung, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, etc. She has played leading roles in operas by Verdi, Donizetti and Bellini. She has also performed The Telephone by Menotti several times.

With Jaap van Zweden and the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam Elma van den Dool performed in Der Schauspieldirector by W.A. Mozart; with Hans Vonk in l'Infinito by Tristan Keuris at the opening of the K & W building in Utrecht; with Péter Eötvös in Les Noces by Igor Stravinsky at the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht; in 1999 she sang the Magnificat by Joep Franssens under Tonu Kaljuste and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Noordhollands Philharmonisch Orkest l'Enfant et les Sortilèges by Ravel. In 2002 she played a role in the Engelprozessionen by Stockhausen. In Ima by Péter Eötvös she sang a solo under the direction of the composer and in the opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner the role of Erste Knabe under the baton of Jaap van Zweden. For the KerstMatinee in the Concertgebouw she sang a solo in Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein, conducted by Mariss Jansons. She sang soprano with the De Nederlandse Opera from October 1986 to February 1993.

Elma van den Dool regularly gives Lieder recitals with her husband Corné Mooibroek as a pianist. She has been a member of Groot Omroepkoor since 1993.

Two modern compositions by Dutch composers have been written especially for Elma van den Dool's voice: been written, Loflied op de Wijsheid by Maurice Pirenne and Duizend jaren, Één seconde by her brother Jacques van den Dool.

Elma van den Dool teaches singing in her own studio in Hilversum since November 1995. In 2013 she was one of the voice coaches for the project Volksopera Ondiep in Utrecht.

Finally, Elma van den Dool often co-operates with radio and CD recordings for various broadcasters. She currently lives in Hilversum, the Netherlands.
