David Clatworthy (Baritone)

Born: April 14, 1931 - Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA
Died: November 19, 2021 - New York City, New York, USA

The American baritone and teacher, David Turner Clatworthy, developed a love of both singing and baseball and was awarded two full baseball scholarships to Marquette and University of Arizona. He played for the University of Arizona Wildcats for 2 years until he decided to switch to the music department to sing opera. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degee from the University of Arizona. Determined to succeed, he soon auditioned for legendary opera singer Richard Bonelli who then brought him to California for lessons. His studies continued while serving his country in the U.S. Military and starting a family. Upon being accepted to The Juilliard School he pursued a double masters at the Juilliard School of Music in Opera and Voice, followed by a graduate degree in Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He studied voice with Bloom, Heinz, and Boyajian. He received scholarships and grants from the University of Arizona, Juilliard, Berkshire Music Center, William M. Sullivan Musical Foundation, and Martha Baird Rockefeller Foundation.

David Clatworthy was a leading baritone with New York City Opera (1962-1977), Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Society of Washington, D.C., and nearly all other regional opera companies in the USA. He appeared as soloist with many of the American major orchestras, including Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and Philadelphia Orchestra, and as featured soloist in many festivals, including Tanglewood, Caramoor, Central City, Chautauqua, Marlboro, Baldwin-Wallace College Bach Festival and Spoleto USA.

David Clatworthy was recognized for his unique portrayal of Count Almaviva in W.A. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and a recording of Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite on RCA records with Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, both of which he was very proud. While still performing with NYCO he began teaching voice at Binghamton University (1971-1999) and went on to become Chair of the Music Department. He worked hard to get the music school accredited where it was finally recognized nationally as a department of excellence. In 1998, his life came full circle when he joined his wife, Diane Richardson Clatworthy, as a Professor in the Department of Vocal Arts at The Juilliard School.

Recordings: RCA, Mercury, Vanguard. TV/radio performances on PBS, NBC, ABC, CBS, and NPR.
