Description:

“Gottlob es geht nunmehr zum Ende” (Thank God, the end is near, http://www.bach-chorales.com/BWV0321.htm, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28CPMekkcIY) is based on the text of Christian Weise (1680) of seven 6-line stanzas, to the melody (Zahn 2853) of Johann Balthasar Reimann (Hirschberg 1747, Birnstiel 1769). J.S. Bach set the hymn as plain chorale, BWV 321. J.S. Bach used an adaptation of the first verse of the C. Weise (1642-1708) poem “Der weinende Petrus” (The weeping Peter) for the text of the aria "Ach, mein Sinn" in Johannes-Passion (BWV 245). Gotha pietist poet Benjamin Schmolck (1672-1737) provided an alternate text to “Gottlob es geht nunmehr zum Ende,” called “Ich liegt und schlafe ganz mit Frieden” (I lie down and sleep completely in peace, Psalm 4:8), four stanzas in his Lieder und Gebete. “Gottlob es geht" is found in the current Lutheran Hymnal with new text as "The Death of Jesus Christ, Our Lord” (http://www.lutheran-hymnal.com/lyrics/tlh163.htm).

German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

Gottlob, es geht nunmehr zm Ende,
Das meiste Schrecken ist vollbracht;
Mein Jesus reicht mir schon die Hände,
Mein Jesus, der mich selig macht.
Drum lasst mich gehn, ich reise fort,
Mein Jesus ist mein letztes Wort.

1. Life's radiant sun to rest is sinking,
Earth and its troubles distant fade;
Jesus invites me to His keeping,
He Who hath man's salvation made.
My course is set, I go with glee:
Jesus, my Lord, is all to me.

2.

3.

4.

5. Jesus o'er death triumphant conquered,
On the cruel Cross for mortals bled.
So death's among my foes not numbered,
For I'm Christ's member, He's my Head.
All that is His to me He gives;
Wherefore my soul in Him believes.

6. Gedenkt mir nicht an eitle Sachen,
Der Höchste sorget fin. die Welt:
Befeblt es ihm, er wirds wohl machen,
Das Licht und Recht den Platz behält:
Gott wende Jammer, List und Mord
Durch Jesum als mein letztes Wort.

6. Turned are my thoughts from earth's vain treasure.
God hath me ever in His care;
Leave all to Him, to me He'll measure
Bounty and grace so rich and rare.
If I to Jesus only cling,
He will my soul to glory bring.

7. Nun freuet euch, es geht zum Ende,
Mein Jesus heisst der letzte Ruhm:
Wie fröhlich klopf ich in die Hande,
Wo bleibst du doch, mein Eigenthum?
Ach, Jesu! Jesu! sei mein Wort:
Nun schweig ich still und fahre fort.

7. Then be of cheer, the journey's over,
The last and great reward's in sight!
How joyous heaven shall I discover
Where Thou, Lord, reignest, glorious, bright.
Ah, Jesu, Jesu, Thou art mine:
To Thee my soul do I resign.
