Text for Cantata 156
Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe

Original German Text

English Translation

1. SINFONIA

2. CHORAL (Sopran); ARIA (Tenor)

TENOR
Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe,

SOPRAN
Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt,

TENOR
bald fällt der kranke Leib hinein,

SOPRAN
hilf mir in meinen Leiden,

TENOR
komm, lieber Gott, wenn dirs gefällt,

SOPRAN
was ich dich bitt, versag mir nicht.

TENOR
Ich habe schon mein Haus bestellt,

SOPRAN
Wenn sich mein Seel soll scheiden,
so nimm sie, Herr, in deine Händ.

TENOR
nur laß mein Ende selig sein!

SOPRAN
Ist alles gut, wenn gut das End.

TENOR
I stand with one foot in the grave,

SOPRANO
Do with me, God, according to your goodness,

TENOR
soon the afflicted body will fall into it,

SOPRANO
help me in my suffering,

TENOR
come, dear God, if it pleases you,

SOPRANO
what I beg of you, do not withhold from me.

TENOR
I have already put my house in order,

SOPRANO
When my soul shall depart
so take it, Lord, into your hands.

TENOR
just let my ending be blessed!

SOPRANO
All is well, that ends well.

3. REZITATIV (Baß)

Mein Angst und Not,
mein Leben und mein Tod
steht, liebster Gott, in deinen Händen;
so wirst du auch auf mich
dein gnädig Auge wenden.
Willst du mich meiner Sünden wegen
ins Krankenbette legen,
mein Gott, so bitt ich dich,
laß deine Güte größer sein als die Gerechtigkeit;
doch hast du mich darzu versehn,
daß mich mein Leiden soll verzehren,
ich bin bereit,
dein Wille soll an mir geschehn,
verschone nicht und fahre fort,
laß meine Not nicht lange währen;
je länger hier, je später dort.

My fear and distress,
my life and my death,
rest, dearest God, in your hands;
so you will turn your eye
of mercy towards me.
If you will, due to my sins,
lay me upon the sickbed,
my God, then I bid you
let your goodness be greater than justice;
indeed you have equipped me for this,
that my suffering might be abated,
I am ready,
your will can transpire for me,
spare me not and proceed ahead,
let my distress not last long;
the longer here, the later I get there.

4. ARIA (Alt)

Herr, was du willt, soll mir gefallen,
weil doch dein Rat am besten gilt.
In der Freude,
in dem Leide,
im Sterben, in Bitten und Flehn
laß mir allemal geschehn,
Herr, wie du willt.

Lord, whatever you will, shall please me,
for indeed your counsel is deemed for the best.
In joy,
in suffering,
in dying, in pleading and supplication
let always transpire for me,
Lord, as you will.

5. REZITATIV (Baß)

Und willst du, daß ich nicht soll kranken,
so werd ich dir von Herzen danken;
so bist du, Gott, mein Trost
und meines Herzens Teil!

And if you will that I not be afflicted,
then I will thank you from the heart;
but do grant me also along with that
that within my refreshed body too
my soul be without affliction
and always remain healthy.
Make it aware through Spirit and word,
that this is my salvation,
and when my body and soul languish,
then you, God, are my comfort
and my heart's portion!

6. CHORAL

Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir
im Leben und im Sterben;
allein zu dir steht mein Begier,
Herr, laß mich nicht verderben!
Erhalt mich nur in deiner Huld,
sonst wie du willt, gib mir Geduld,
dein Will, der ist der beste.

Lord, as you will, so it is right by me,
in life and in dying;
alone in you reside my desires,
Lord, let me not perish!
Preserve me in your grace
otherwise as you will, grant me forbearance,
your will, it is for the best.
