Text for Cantata 111
Was mein Gott will, das g’scheh allzeit

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Was mein Gott will, das g‘scheh allzeit,
sein Will, der ist der beste;
zu helfen den'n er ist bereit,
die an ihn glauben feste.
Er hilft aus Not, der fromme Gott,
und züchtiget mit Maßen:
wer Gott vertraut, fest auf ihn baut,
den will er nicht verlassen.

What my God wills, may it ever occur,
his will, it is best;
he is prepared to help those
who firmly believe in him.
He delivers from need, this devoted God,
and chastises in moderation:
whoever trusts God, building firmly on him,
him will he not abandon.

2. ARIA (Baß)

Entsetze dich, mein Herze, nicht,
Gott ist dein Trost und Zuversicht
und deiner Seelen Leben.
Ja, was sein weiser Rat bedacht,
dem kann die Welt und Menschenmacht
unmöglich widerstreben.

Be not dismayed, my heart,
God is your comfort and assurance
and life for your soul.
Indeed, whatever his wise counsel imparts
is impossible for the world
or human might to defy.

3. REZITATIV (Alt)

O Törichter! der sich von Gott entzieht
und wie ein Jonas dort
vor Gottes Angesichte flieht;
auch unser Denken ist ihm offenbar,
und unsers Hauptes Haar hat er gezählet.
Wohl dem, der diesen Schutz erwählet
im gläubigen Vertrauen,
auf dessen Schluß und Wort
mit Hoffnung und Geduld zu schauen.

O foolish one! who would evade God,
and like Jonah did long ago
flees from the face of God;
our very thoughts are apparent to him,
and he has numbered the hairs on our heads.
Blessed is the one who elects this protection
in faithful trust,
looking toward his resolution and word
in hope and patience.

4. ARIA (Alt, Tenor)

So geh ich mit beherzten Schritten,
auch wenn mich Gott zum Grabe führt.
Gott hat die Tage aufgeschrieben,
so wird, wenn seine Hand mich rührt,
des Todes Bitterkeit vertrieben.

Thus I walk with gallant strides,
even as God guides me toward the grave.
God has prescribed the days,
thus when his hand rouses me,
death's bitterness will be dispelled.

5. REZITATIV (Sopran)

Drum wenn der Tod zuletzt den Geist
noch mit Gewalt aus seinem Körper reißt,
so nimm ihn, Gott, in treue Vaterhände!
Wenn Teufel, Tod und Sünde mich bekriegt
und meine Sterbekissen ein Kampfplatz werden müssen,
so hilf, damit in dir mein Glaube siegt!
O seliges, gewünschtes Ende!

Therefore, in the end, once death
forcefully wrests my soul from its body,
do receive it God, into your trusty paternal hands!
When devil, death and sin wage war against me,
and my deathbed turns into a battle ground,
help my faith be victorious in you!
O blessed, desirable ending!

6. CHORAL

Noch eins, Herr, will ich bitten dich,
du wirst mirs nicht versagen:
wenn mich der böse Geist anficht,
laß mich doch nicht verzagen.
Hilf, steur und wehr, ach Gott, mein Herr,
zu Ehren deinem Namen.
Wer das begehrt, dem wirds gewährt;
drauf sprech ich fröhlich: Amen.

Just one more thing, Lord, do I ask of you
you will not deny me this:
when the evil spirit assails me
let me, even then, not despair.
Help, steer and defend, oh God my Lord,
to the honor of your name.
Whomever so desires, will it be granted;
to this I gladly say: Amen.
