Johann Wilhelm Machts was born the son of Johann Christoph Machts (musician in Oberroßla). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 31, 1735; studied there, where he was a Thomaner and a pupil of J.S. Bach from 1735 to 1746; and at Universität Leipzig from 1746 (enrollment for the summer semester 1746). Like other J.S. Bach's pupils, he helped him in copying, identified in the manuscripts as Anon. Vj. After his studies, from about 1757, he was official (with different titles) in the Geheimen Kanzlei (secret law firm) in Weimar (1759 secret registrar, 1769 secretary secretary, 1785 secret secretary secretary, retired in 1804); he also was active as a musician at the Weimar court.
Johann Wilhelm Machts worked for J.S. Bach as a music scribe (copyist) during his time in the Thomasschule and was therefore suggested by Peter Wollny as his private student. Later, in addition to his work in the law firm (most recently under Johann Wolfgang von Goethe), he was also involved in musical performances at the Weimar court, sometimes in a managerial position.
