The Swedish composer, music critic, and teacher, Josef Petrus Jonsson, studied piano, and later received instruction in orchestration from Ivar Hellman in Norrköping.
From 1922 to 1966 Josef Jonsson was music critic of the newspaper Östergötlands Folkblad.
Josef Jonsson's works reveal a fine command of classical forms in a late Romantic style. He wrote 3 symphonies (Nordland, 1919-1922; 1931; 1947); Chamber Symphony (1949); several orchestral overtures and suites; Violin Concerto (Norrk6ping, April 10, 1960); Festival Prelude for Orchestra (1961); Korallrevet, symphonic poem for Baritone, Chorus, and Orchestra (1916); Missa solemnis for Chorus, Orchestra, and Organ (934); Cantata for Speaking Chorus, Women's Chorus, Soli, 2 Flutes, and Piano (Norrköping, May 5, 1962); chamber music; piano pieces; songs. |
