Johann Gottlob Haupt (Copyist, Bach's Pupil)

Born: December 19, 1714 - Dewitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany
Died: not determined

Johann Gottlob Haupt was born to Daniel Haupt (schoolmaster). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on June 10, 1727 and studied there from 1727 to 1735. J.S. Bach reported (1730) “not yet ready to be used in the 1st choir (figural music)”. In 1731-1735, he was one of J.S. Bach's main copyists, appearing in the manuscripts as Hauptkopist E; Anon. 8. After his studies, he worked as catechist in Mockau and Gohlis and applied unsuccessfully as schoolmaster in Schönefeld (1738) and Großstädeln (1747) as well as rector in Eilenburg (1747).
