The German pianist and piano teacher, Dieter Weber, was born the son of the theologian Gotthilf Weber (1900-1987) and his wife Dore, born Volz (1910-1985). In 1948 he began studying piano with Jürgen Uhde in Stuttgart, which he continued from 1954 with Bruno Seidlhofer at the Akademie für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien and completed on October 22, 1956 with “general distinction” . From 1957 he was Bruno Seidlhofer's assistant, in 1961 he became a teacher under contract and in 1974 then Professor for piano major.
The pianist Rudolf Buchbinder recalls in an interview: “Back then Seidlhofer had a fantastic assistant. Dieter Weber. One of the most gifted pianists who suffered greatly from his nervousness. He was unable to perform on stage that he did in class before us. But I learned a lot from him technically. ” In his book Die Konzertpianisten der Gegenwart, Hans-Peter Range writes: “Great works by Chopin and Liszt that can only be mastered technically is a remarkable achievement, this (…) young pianist masters with an elegance, a sense of style and with a sovereignty that every listener must be amazed. (...) He gives great hope, especially as a Chopin and Liszt interpreter. ”
At the 6th ARD-Wettbewerb in Munich, Dieter Weber shared the 2nd prize with Michael Ponti in 1958. The following year he won 3rd prize at the Concurso Internacional de Piano in Rio de Janeiro behind Peter Frankl and Sérgio Varella-Cid; and in the 1st Wiener Beethoven-Wettbewerb in 1961 he won the 2nd prize if the 1st was not awarded.
Dieter Weber has appeared as a soloist in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Bulgaria, France, Scandinavia and South America. Dieter Weber recorded works by J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms and L.v. Beethoven for ORF. At the invitation of Artur Rubinstein, he was a jury member at the First Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competiton 1974 in Tel Aviv. Among his well over 100 students there are numerous award winners of important international competitions that give concerts worldwide.
Dieter Weber was married to the pianists Herta Kern, Seta Tanyel (b 1947) and most recently to Verena Pfenninger. |
