The Hungarian baritone, János Tóth, studied music at high school in Veszprém, where he first learned to play the violin and then to sing. In 1974-1975 he sang in the Művészegyüttes Kórusában. He studied singing at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, majoring in singing and opera from 1975 to 1982 as a student of Boldizsár Keönch and Yevgeny Nyesterenko. In 1982, he won 3rd award at the international Erkel-Kodály Énekversenyen (Singing Competition), and was signed by the Opera House this year. He made his debut as Jack in Porgy and Bess. He has been directing since 1989, his most important works are: Bánk bán, Márta, The Gypsy Baron, Nabucco.
His main roles: Wozzeck in Alban Berg's Wozzeck, Tiborc in Erkel's Bánk bán, Don Alfonso in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Leporello in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Dapertutto in J. Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann, Scarpia in G. Puccini's Tosca, Géronte de Ravoir in Puccini's Manon Lescaut, Don Bartolo in G. Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, Alidoro in Rossini's La Cenerentola, Baron Ochs in R. Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, Cipolla in Vajda's Mário and the Wizard, Roberto in G. Verdi's I Vespri Siciliani, Alberich in R. Wagner's Das Rheingold, Moses in K. Weill's The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany.
His Awards include: Liszt Ferenc Prize (1989), Mihály Székely memorial plaque (1992). |
