Daniel L. Reid (Conductor)

Born: March 25, 1991 - Carlinville, Illinois, USA

The American conductor, pianist, baritone, organist, and composer, Daniel L. Reid, spent his early childhood in Westchester, Illinois, and grew up in Carlinville, Illinois, where his parents still live. While in Carlinville, he studied piano with Eldon Wold, Jr., to whom he credits much of his musical foundation. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies, Music from Monmouth College, a liberal arts school in Monmouth, Illinois (2009-0013). While at Monmouth, he sang with and accompanied the Monmouth Chorale, an ensemble with which he travelled on several national and international tours, under the direction of Tim Pahel. The last of these tours, in 2013, culminated with a performance of Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass at Carnegie Hall. Along with many other campus activities, he also performed with the College’s Wind Ensemble, with which he traveled to Italy in 2011 as the principal euphonium player. During the 2012-2013 season, he performed with the Nova Singers under the direction of Laura Lane, an experience that inspired him to seek more professional opportunities in music. He then was Youth Minister at Ss. Mary and Joseph Church in Carlinville, Illinois (October 2013-March 2014).

Daniel L. Reid obtained his Master of Divinity degree in Theology from Yale University (2014-2017), where he studied liberation theology and sacred music and traveled to Nicaragua in the summer of 2016 to work with Mujer y Communidad, a women’s empowerment NGO. While at Yale, he was active in many of the University’s choirs including the Yale Camerata under the direction of Maggie Brooks, through which he partook in several world premiere performances including Robert Kyr’s Transfiguration in 2017. He also worked for St. Thomas More at Yale, where he studied composition and contributed many new hymn arrangements to the Cloud Hymnal, an online hymnal project pioneered by St. Thomas More’s music director, Richard Gard.

Daniel L. Reid was the Director of Music and Liturgy at Sacred Heart and St. Augustine churches in Jeffersonville, Indiana, a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky (July 2017-July 2021). While in Louisville, he sang with the Louisville Chamber Choir under the direction of Kent Hatteberg, through which he frequently collaborated with the Louisville Orchestra. The most notable of these collaborations was a performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers, in which he sang several bass soli. A devout Episcopalian, he also sang with the Evensong choir of St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church under the direction of Jim Rightmyer. Additionally, he started a concert series at the Jeffersonville churches, which culminated in hosting the LLC and LO in a performance of George Frideric Handel's Messiah in December of 2019. During the Covid pandemic, he organized a series of small ensemble recording projects with local singers, the results of which can be seen and heard on the Jeffersonville churches’ webpage.

Daniel L. Reid arrived in Rochester, New York in the summer of 2021 to begin studies with William Weinert at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester (since August 2021). He is a member of Eastman Repertory Singers and Eastman Chorale (Director: William Weinert) as a bass singer. He currently resides in Rochester with his wife, the Rev. Rachel B.L. Reid, and their two-year-old calico cat, Rosie. In his spare time, he enjoys running, reading, spending time with friends and family, and exploring new foods and places.
