Cheryl Pickering (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Australia

The Australian mezzo-soprano, music teacher and artistic director, Cheryl Pickering, obtained her Certificate in Music Teaching from Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music; her Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from University of Adelaide; and her Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Psychology from Open University UK.

Cheryl Pickering is a singer, director, writer and producer. She has been active as as a mezzo-soprano singer since 1983. She has extensive performing experience in opera, oratorio and recital, within Australia and in the UK. She has performed at the Bath International Festival, the Tate Gallery St Ives Festival, the South Bank Centre, Symphony Hall Birmingham, Greenwich Maritime Museum, with the Lindsay Quartet and for English National Opera's Studio Night series. She was a founding member of the acclaimed a cappella group The Shout, performing extensively across the UK and appearing in Because I Sing on Channel 4 Television and on their CD, "On Arrival". She performs regularly in Adelaide, and has appeared in the Adelaide Festival of Arts, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and the Festival Centre Sessions and Intimate Music series. She performs regularly on the local concert platform, in recital and in opera gala and oratorio performances including appearances in Elder Hall, the Adelaide Town Hall, St Peter's Cathedral and Coriole Winery.

Cheryl Pickering is active as a singing teacher since 1993. She is a highly regarded and sought after singing teacher. Her students have been major prize-winners in vocal competitions and and include professional performers. She was the vocal adjudicator for the 2008 Adelaide Eisteddfod and the 2012 Balaklava Eisteddfod.

Cheryl Pickering is active as a director since 2000. Her directing work outside Various People is diverse. For Operatu, a partnership between the State Opera of South Australia and Tutti Arts (a series of 60 Minute Operas for State Opera of South Australia's education program), she directed the acclaimed choral theatre production The Shouting Fence in the 2009 Adelaide Fringe Festival and devised and directed the highly successful circus-themed W.A. Mozart's Magic Flute with Cirkidz and Tutti in 2011. She has also created and produced productions for Arts in Health at the Flinders Medical Centre, the Royal Institute of Australia, and the Adelaide Cemeteries Authority (including include I See Your Beating Heart for the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital), and has adapted and directed opera for schools in England and in South Australia. She also created the award-winning annual event On The Terrace, attracting over 1,000 people each day to chamber music within Adelaide’s four North Terrace cultural institutions. Arts in Health productions, London, and Heartsong in partnership with the Flinders Medical Centre and the Royal Institute of Australia.

Cheryl Pickering has been active as Artistic Director since 2010. As Artistic Director of Various People, her work has included producing and directing Instructions For An Imaginary Man for the Adelaide Festival of Arts; The Velvet Gentleman for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival; I See Your Beating Heart, Small Victories, The Red Pinafore for InSPACE and Intimate Music series at the Adelaide Festival Centre; Daughter of the Sea, Stari Most fror Come Out Festival. Other works Cheryl has directed for Various People include Vesalius: A Requiem, listed in The Advertiser Top Ten Shows for 2010, and 60 Minute Opera versions of Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel, Madam Butterfly and Georges Bizet's Carmen for the State Opera Studio. She also curates and performs in regular concerts, including performances as part of the Elder Perspectives series.

Cheryl Pickering is also Chair of Chamber Music Adelaide (CMA) since 2012. Chamber Music Adelaide was formed in late 2012 and exists to support and advocate for the continued performance of high quality chamber music in Adelaide.
