Chorale de l’Université de Montréal (Choir)

Founded: Montréal, Québec, Canada

The Chorale de l’Université de Montréal (Université de Montréal Choir), directed by Matthew C. Lane, offers training accessible to all students of the Faculty of Music hoping to enjoy the experience of a large ensemble. Participation in the Choir is also possible for those from other faculties who already possess basic musical knowledge (an audition is required beforehand).

Each year the Choir presents at least two concerts, often at the magnificent St-Viateur d’Outremont Church. These concerts may be collaborations with the Atelier de musique baroque (Baroque music workshop), the Orchestre de l’Université de Montréal or another large ensemble of the Faculty of Music or of École LUMI (young people’s school). Performances with ensembles and artists from outside the faculty may also be on the program. Each of the Choir’s concerts constitutes a unique event attracting a sizeable audience, choral singing being a deeply rooted tradition in Montréal and in Québec generally.

The educational goal of the Choir is to promote working together with a good singing technique, in-depth work on homogeneity and musicality, a historical, theoretical and textual understanding of pieces, and also to strengthen effective strategies for rehearsal, personal practice and professionalism as a musician. The Choir offers a variety of repertoires covering several centuries, including not just well-known masterpieces but creations by students and living composers, especially those with Québec and Montréal connections. Another goal of the Choir’s is to promote diversity in its contribution to the Québec music scene.
