Pierre Mak (Baritone)

Born: The Netherlands

The Dutch baritone, Pierre Mak, studied at the conservatories of Zwolle and Utrecht and at the Mozarteum University Salzburg and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. He participated in in master-classes given by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Robert Holl and took lessons with Aafje Heynis, Henny Diemer, Margreet Honig and Ira Siff.

Pierre Mak works frequently as a soloist in performances of oratorios. His wide-ranging repertoire includes J.S. Bach's Passions, a large number of 19th century oratorios, such as Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, St. Paul and Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn, and 20th century oratorios such as Carmina burana by Orff and Tippett's A Child Of Our Time. His great passion for the German romantic Lieder and the French Art Song has led him to give countless recitals in these genres.

In the autumn of 2007 Pierre Mak made his opera debut playing with great success the role of Der Gatte in Operastudio Nederland's production of Reigen (Philippe Boesmans, 1993) directed by Harry Kupfer. This production later returned to Théâtre de la Bastille in Paris. In 2009, he performed in a reworking of P.C. Hooft's Granida, produced by Stichting Ipermestra and Wim Trompert. In 2011, he sang the role of Frank in Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss, directed by Hans Nieuwenhuis. In 2013, he was part of the project Rheingold op de Rijn as Fasolt in the very successful production of Das Rheingold by Richard Wagner. In July 2018, he sang the role of Lamme Goedzak in the critically acclaimed opera Thijl by Jan van Gilse, which was produced by the Utrechts Studenten Concert.

Pierre Mak teaches voice as a principal subject at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Among the many singers who have studied with him and/or attended his master-classes are: David Cohen (Counter-tenor), Michaël van Ekeren (Bass-Baritone), Jon Etxabe-Arzuaga (Tenor), Robert Kuizenga (Counter-tenor), Falco van Loon (Tenor), Olivier Rault (Tenor), Eske Tibben (Contralto/Mezz-soprano).
