The Canadian tenor, Josh Lovell, studied music University of Victoria and at University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance (left in 2017). Hhe also attended the Merola Opera Program (May -August 2016). He is the winner of the 39th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition (2021), the Grand Prize and Opera Prize winner of the 52nd Annual International Vocal Competition’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands (2019), the Opus Klassik award for the 2024 Opera Recording of the Year, in addition to, the Oper! Award for the 2024 Best opera recording for the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s recording of Le Princesse de Trébizonde, the 2nd place winner of the Dallas Opera competition, and the 3rd place winner of the Marcello Giordani Foundation competition.
Josh Lovell, whose voice has been described by the The Guardian as “a handsome sounding tenor with a warm, liquid voice and easy high notes” is quickly gaining notoriety in the world’s most prestigious houses. An incredibly versatile artist, his repertoire spans the Baroque to Romantic periods, as well as modern works of the 20th Century.
A former member of the Wiener Staatsoper ensemble (since August 2019), Josh Lovell’s performed roles include Ernesto, Don Ottavio, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore, Fenton in Falstaff, Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier, Ruodi in Guillaume Tell, Lurcanio in George Frideric Handel's Ariodante, Andres in Alban Berg's Wozzeck, Noboru in Henze’s Das verratene meer, Telemachus in a new production of Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, and Lukas in a staged ballet version of Haydn’s Die Jahreszeiten.
Outside of Vienna, Josh Lovell recently made debuts at the Teatro alla Scala as Ferdinand in Thomas Adès’ The Tempest (November 2022), the Glyndebourne Festival as Ernesto in Don Pasquale (June 2022), the Bolshoi Theater as Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia, (February 2020), Oper Leipzig as Don Ottavio in a new production of W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Gérald in Lakmé at the Berlin Philharmonie (September 2022), and Don Gomez de Féria in Camille Saint-Saëns' Henry VIII at the Bard Festival. and the Bayerische Staatsoper as Florville in Il signor Bruschino (March 2021), and later, the Italian Singer in Der Rosenkavalier.
In the 2023-2024 season, Josh Lovell performed Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte with Opéra national de Paris (December 2023) and Edinburgh International Festival, Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Italian Singer in Capriccio with Christian Thielemann at the Salzburg Festival, Medoro in Orlando Paladino with Giovanni Antonini at Teatro Real and Gran Teatre del Liceu, Ernesto in Don Pasquale with Vancouver Opera, and Jacquino in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio with the Canadian Opera Company (September 2023). In concert, he made debuts at the Royal Concertgebouw singing in Rossini’s Petite messe solonnelle with the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass and Vesperae solennes de confessore with Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, Clistene in Cimarosa’s L’Olimpiade in recording and on tour with Les Talens Lyriques and Christophe Rousset at the Opéra royal de Versailles and Theater an der Wien, the Bach Consort Wien for G.F. Handel's Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, Messiah with North Carolina Symphony Orchestra and Peter in G.F. Handel's Brockes Passion, HWV 48 with The English Concert and Harry Bicket.
In the 2024-25 season, Josh Lovell will return to Teatro alla Scala for a new production of Gassmann’s L’Opera seria as Ritornello, debut at the Rossini Opera Festival as Lindoro in a new production of L’italiana in Algeri, Oper Frankfurt as Grimoaldo in G.F. Handel's Rodelinda, and Atlanta Opera as Jupiter and Apollo in G.F. Handel's Semele. In concert, he will debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in W.A. Mozart'sW.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass, W.A. Mozart's Requiem with Stéphane Denève and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and a solo concert with orchestra with the Victoria Symphony in British Columbia.
An avid and experienced concert artist, Josh Lovell has vast experience from numerous performances of the works of G.F. Handel, W.A. Mozart, Haydn, Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and J.S. Bach. He has performed J.S. Bach's Coffee Cantata BWV 211 with Music of the Baroque, Chicago, Opera Rara and the London Philharmonic Orchestra as Prince Casimir in a recording and performance of Offenbach’s La Princesse de Trébizonde, Messiah with The International Music Foundation, the Victoria Symphony, as well as the Apollo Chorus of Chicago, W.A. Mozart's Requiem with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248 with the Sinfonietta Rīga, the Evangelist in J.S. Bach Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, and sang J.S. Bach's Magnificat in D major BWV 243 and select cantatas with Baroque ensemble I Musici de Montréal. Additionally, he has appeared with the Wiener Philharmoniker, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and L’Orquestra Simfònica de les Balears. |
