The Hong Kong Chinese soprano, Alison Lau [Chinese: 劉卓昕 ], comes from a musical family and had a wonderful time singing and touring with the Hong Kong Children’s Choir’s Chamber Choir as a kid. However, it was not until her first year in university, studying history and linguistics to prepare for a future in journalism, that she realised she needed to sing. So she went on to take her first classical singing lesson at age 20. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (2013), where she studied with Ella Kiang; and her Master of Music degree from New England Conservatory in Boston (2015), where she studied voice with Lisa Saffer, and Lied singing with Cameron Stowe and Tanya Blaich. Throughout the years, she was awarded various scholarships to support her musical studies. In 2015-2017 she was a young artist at the Opera Hong Kong young artist programme. Her musical journey has also been enriched by singing in the master-classes of great artists such as Barbara Bonney, Philippe Herreweghe, Margreet Honig, Sigiswald Kuijken, Lionel Meunier, Dorothee Mields, Rudolf Piernay and Alex Potter.
After winning competitions in Japan (2016) and Italy (2017), Alison Lau was signed by Universal Music, becoming the first classical singer in Hong Kong to record an album with Decca Records (2018), and was often invited to perform on TV and mass media during the collaboration.
The pivotal moments in Alison Lau's life as a singer were singing J.S. Bach's music with Die Konzertisten and Spanish Baroque music with Al Ayre Español. Her dream is to study and sing J.S. Bach's music for her entire life. In the middle of the pandemic in 2021, she moved to the Netherlands, leaving behind a “past life” of singing both classical and pop music in Hong Kong, to specialise in singing Baroque repertoire with Xenia Meijer at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In March 2022, she began singing with Nederlandse Bachvereniging and Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir (Director: Ton Koopman). In the 2023-2024 season, she toured with the Nederlands Kamerkoor (Director: Peter Dijkstra), and was invited as a soloist with Belgian ensembles Il Gardellino (Director: Marcel Ponseele) and Vox Luminis (Director: Lionel Meunier). In the 2024-2025 season, she made her debut at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as Belinda in Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas in a concert with Il Gardellino.
Alison Lau is a founding member of young Baroque ensembles Pont Baroque (NL) and Song is Being (HK). |
