James Knight (Piano)

Born: Wichita, Kansas, USA

The American pianist and music pedagoguem, James Knight, studied piano in Wichita, Kansas with Lucille Hayden and Guy Johnson. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from Friends University. During his undergraduate years, he won the Naftzger Piano Award and the Kansas Cultural Trust Award, enabling him to study in New York City at the Manhattan School of Music (1988-1996), where he studied under Constance Keene. He obtained his Master of Music degree (1990) and DMA degree (1996) from the institution. At this time, he took master-classes from John Perry, Aube Tzerko, Bela Nagy, Byron Janis, Karl Ulrich Schnabel and Joaquin Soriano. He was a finalist in the Leschetizky Piano Competition and also performed at Steinway Hall in New York City.

James Knight is now (as of May 2019) in his 24th year of teaching at Friends University, serving as Assistant Professor of Piano. He has also had several prize-winning students in local competitions including the WMMTA piano concerto auditions, the Senseney-Schneider competition and the Miller Concerto Auditions.
