Christian Klutting (Conductor)

Born: August 17, 1943 - Dresden, Saxony, Germany

The German conductor, Christian Kluttig, attended the Dresden Kreuzschule, and studied from 1961 to 1967 at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden: conducting with Rudolf Neuhaus and piano with Ingeborg Finke. During his training, he participated in conducting classes by Arvid Jansons, Igor Markevitch, Hans Swarowsky and Witold Rowicki.

Christian Kluttig received his first engagement in 1967 as a solo repetitor at the Staatsoper Dresden. In 1970 he became First Kapellmeister and in 1975 Musical Superviser of the Städtischen Theatern Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz). In 1979 he became Musical Superviser of the Landestheater Halle and Principal Conductor of the Händelfestspielorchester. Guest performances have taken him to international orchestras (Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, Slovenian Philharmonic, Dresdner Philharmonie, Berliner Symphoniker, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Radio Symphony Orchestra Bucharest, Zagreb and others). In Halle (Saale) he was appointed General Music Director, and in 1981 awarded the Halle Handel Prize. He gave several guest performances at the Festival Kissinger Sommer with the the Ensemble des Opernhauses Halle. For his program design, he was awarded the 1996 Prize of the Deutschen Musikverleger-Verbandes (German Music Publishers Association). From 1992 to 1998, he was General Music Director of the State Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie and the Theater Koblenz. In 2002, he terminated his activity as a conductor due to irreversible hearing disorder. To this day he continues his pianistic activity as Lied accompanist and chamber music player.

In 1998, Christian Kluttig was appointed Professor of conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden, and from 2000 to 2007 taught also at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig. From 2007 to 20015, he taught conducting at HfM Dresden. He directed several courses of the Conductor Forum at the Deutschen Musikrat (German Music Council).

His son Roland Kluttig (b 1968) is also a conductor.
