Ruth Kiang (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England

The English mezzo-soprano, Ruth Kiang, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Durham (2001-2004); and her Master of Music degree in Musicoilogy from the University of Cambridge (2004-2005). She moved to London in 2005. She currently Ruth studies with Yvonne Kenny.

Ruth Kiang now has a busy freelance career, performing and recording regularly with a wide variety of professional vocal ensembles, including Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh), Polyphony (Director: Stephen Layton), Choir of the Enlightenment, Choir of the Academy of Ancient Music (Director: Richard Egarr), BBC Singers, Eric Whitacre Singers, Philharmonia Voices, Britten Sinfonia Voices, Sonoro and 5-part consort, the Clerks.

CD recordings include Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah (with step-out solos), B. Britten's A Boy was Born, an unaccompanied programme: A Song of Farewell, J. Haydn's Seasons (forthcoming) with Gabrieli Consort; multiple recordings with Polyphony: Bruckner, Francis Poulenc, Gabriel Jackson, Lukaszewski, George Frideric Handel, a disc of American music, J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245), Arvo Pärt and Karl Jenkins; J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) with Academy of Ancient Music; multiple recordings with Eric Whitacre Singers. She has also performed on many film soundtracks as part of Metro Voices, Synergy Vocals, Apollo Voices, London Voices and Pinewood Singers.

Recent solo work includes G.F. Handel's Judus Maccabeus (Israelitish Man, Messenger & Priest) with Carshalton Choral Society; F. Mendelssohn's Elijah with Brandenburg Sinfonia at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London; step-out solos in J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) with Sonoro at St Martin-in-the-Fields; Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria with Constanza Chorus at Marylebone Parish Church. Forthcoming solo work in 2019 includes W.A. Mozart's Requiem with Sonoro and J. Haydn's Nelson Mass with Temple Singers

2018 ensemble engagements included many performances with BBC Singers; a residency at Durham University with the Clerks; a European tour of J. Haydn's Seasons with Gabrieli Consort; a performance and a recording of a reconstructed English Coronation with Gabrieli Consort; multiple performances of the world premiere of Johann Johannsson's Requiem in Swansea with Polyphony; several large European tours of Verdi's Requiem with Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner).

Upcoming work in 2019 includes a John Pickard premiere and Ligeti with BBC Singers; Sonoro’s third commercial recording, of music by Martin Bussey; a tour to Oslo and recording of Karl Jenkins with Polyphony; performances with Gabrieli Consort in UK and Russia; a tour to Budapest with Eric Whitacre Singers; recording of G.F. Handel: Brockes Passion, HWV 48 and tour to Poland of G.F. Handel's Coronation Anthems with Academy of Ancient Music; performance of Verdi with Monteverdi Choir in Paris.
