Gábor Kállay (Tenor, Flute)

Born: Januaruy 2, 1953 - Budapest, Hungary

The Hungarian artistic director, tenor singer, fluatist, mmusic teacher, and composer, Gábor Kállay, graduated in 1976 from the Budapest University of Technology with a degree in Electrical Engineering. During his years at the university, he was a member of the Technical University Orchestra, which led him to commit himself to a career in music. However, he worked in his profession for two years, and then between 1978 and 1985, he was a student of the singing department of the Liszt Academy of Music under József Simándy and Boldizsár Keönch.

At the same time, from 1978 onwards, Gábor Kállay became the soloist and wind instrument player, primarily recorder, of the Camerata Hungarica ensemble, founded in 1970 by László Czidra. The ensemble mainly performed Renaissance and Baroque dance music, medieval sacred music, student songs and flower songs. In 1985, as a fresh graduate of the Academy of Music, he became a private singer at the Hungarian State Opera. He was primarily commissioned to perform comprimario roles, but he also performed as a concert and oratorio singer.

In parallel with his career as a singer and musician, Gábor Kállay also gained a reputation as a composer. In addition to musical pieces and etudes, he is the composer of several transcriptions, a member of the serious music department of the Artisjus Hungarian Copyright Protection Office. He is also a recorder teacher at the Leó Weiner Music School and the Music Secondary School, and the Ádám Jenő Music School in Ferencvárosi.

In addition to his stage roles, Gábor Kállay is a prominent figure in the Hungarian early music movement, and was a member of several renowned chamber orchestras as a singer, soloist, recorder and rebec player (Régi Zene Stúdió, Camerata Hungarica, Mandel Quartet, Capella Savaria, Affetti Musicali, Excanto, etc.). He currently lives in Budapest.
