Caleb Hopkins (Baritone, Conductor)

Born: Februarty 1991 - Greenville, South Carolina, USA

The American baritone, conductor and educator, Caleb Hopkins, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, magna cum laude from Furman University (2009-May 2013); his Master of Music degree in Conducting, summa cum laude, with distinction from the University of Georgia (2013-May 2015); and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester (2018-April 2021). There he served as associate conductor of the Eastman-Rochester Chorus and the Eastman Chorale, conducted in the annual Eastman School of Music: Bach Cantata Series, and was nominated for a teaching award for basic conducting. He has been lucky to work with excellent teachers in both academic and master-class settings. He has studied conducting with William Weinert, Brad Lubman, Mark Scatterday, Neil Varon, Daniel Bara, JD Burnett, Hugh Floyd, William Thomas, Andrew Megill, Ann Howard Jones, Joseph Flummerfelt, Amanda Quist, and John Nelson. His voice teachers include Jan Opalach, Richard Clement, Gregory Broughton, and Bruce Schoonmaker.

Caleb Hopkins is a conductor and baritone with diverse experiences in education and performance. He has maintained an active schedule as a professional chorister and soloist. He has appeared with Kinnara Ensemble (since 2018), Voices, Cecilia Ensemble, Rochester Baroque Vocal Consort, Herring Chamber Ensemble (2016-May 2018), and Duke Chapel Evensong Choir. A few of his credits as soloist include J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, and the title role in Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah. He has also performed behind Kathleen Battle and Andrea Bocelli.

In the Fall of 2022, he will serve as Director of Choirs and Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Bucknell University. Previous academic posts include positions on the faculties of Messiah College (August 2019-2020), Hobart and William Smith Colleges (August 2016-May 2018), and Anderson University (August 2016-May 2018). He has also worked as a church musician in both part and full time capacities across the eastern USA, including First Baptist Church in Athens, Georgia (September 2013-January 2015); Boulevard Baptist Church (February 2015-July 2018); St. Anne Church in Rochester, New York (November 2019-March 2020).

Caleb Hopkins is an active member of professional organizations including NCCO, ACDA, NAfME and served a term on the Furman Singers alumni board. His hobbies outside of music include cooking, long distance running, and playing with his puppy Walter.
