The German bass-baritone, Joachim Höchbauer, began his musical education with the Regensburger Domspatzen before studying singing and song accompaniment at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. He received important artistic instruction from Helmut Deutsch and Wolfram Rieger, Professor Mechthild Georg, as well as from operatic bass Andreas Mitschke.
A robust timbre, resonant lows, and warm high notes: Joachim Höchbauer is in demand for roles in oratorios and operas as well as in high-caliber vocal ensembles. Vocally and musically highly versatile, he confidently navigates various genres, from Orlando di Lasso to Wagner to modern music.
Under the direction of Thomas Hengelbrock, he sang as a soloist in J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232 in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, the Auditorio Nacional Madrid, and the Philharmonie Luxembourg, amongst other venues. Together with Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande, he performed J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 in a memorable performance at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. The Trier Volksfreund wrote about his interpretation of Christ in Georg Philipp Telemann's St Luke Passion: "Joachim Höchbauer is outstanding as Christ, penetrating and with great melodic power."
In a joint production of the Blaibach Concert Hall and the Yekaterinburg Philharmonic, Joachim Höchbauer sang the role of Fasolt in Wagner’s Rheingold with the Tchaikovsky International Youth Orchestra. He interpreted the Oracle in W.A. Mozart's Idomeneo at the Festspielhaus Baden Baden, also under Thomas Hengelbrock. At the Blaibach Concert Hall, he sang the role of Bartolo in a concert performance of W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. Other solo engagements have taken Joachim Höchbauer to the theaters of Bonn and Koblenz.
As well as music from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, Joachim Höchbauer specialises in the polyphonic music of the Renaissance. As an ensemble member with solo parts, he has performed with Voces Suaves in the Berlin Philharmonie and at the Baroque Weekend in Herrenhausen Palace. He also regularly performs with the soloist ensembles DionysosNow (Vienna/Ghent), Vox Luminis (Director: Lionel Meunier), Musica Fiata, La Capella Ducale, Collegium Vocale Gent (Director: Philippe Herreweghe), Chor der J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen (Director: Rudolf Lutz). He currently lives in Cologne, Germany. |
