The American mezzo-soprano, Catherine Hedberg, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from Boston University.
Catherine Hedberg is active as a freelance mezzo-soprano soloist and ensemble singer since September 2000. Praised for her “soulful singing” (The Boston Globe), “polished delivery” and “agile ornamentation” (Boston Classical Review), she is a concert soloist and ensemble musician based in New York City and Boston. A versatile performer with experience in a wide range of genres and periods, she has a particular passion for early repertoire, new music, and the music of Spain.
In previous seasons, Catherine Hedberg was a frequent soloist with Boston’s Cantata Singers, including appearances in Nicholas Maw’s One Foot in Eden Still I Stand, J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass (BWV 232) and Cantatas BWV 11 and BWV 34, Franz Liszt’s Via Crucis, Robert Schumann’s Scenes from Goethe’s Faust, and George Frideric Handel’s Belshazzar. She toured the US with the Boston Camerata in their production Igor Stravinsky's A Symphony of Psalms, and has also appeared as soloist with Newport Baroque Orchestra, Handel Society at Dartmouth College, Berkshire Choral Society, and Nashua Symphony Choral Society.
Catherine Hedberg is a member of the Handel and Haydn Society, with whom she has appeared as a soloist in works including J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass (BWV 232), Magnificat (BWV 243), and cantatas, and in a concert of Dowland songs with lutenist Catherine Liddell. She has been a frequent collaborator with the chamber ensemble, Musicians of the Old Post Road, and appears on the ensemble’s recording of Christmas music from 18th century Central and South America.
Other recent highlights include Copland’s In the Beginning (True Concord), Antonio Vivaldi’s Introduzione e Gloria in D (Church of St. Luke in the Fields), G.F. Handel's Dixit Domimus (Ampersand), J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass (BWV 232) and Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem (Central City Chorus), J.S. Bach’s Missa Brevis in F (BWV 233) (Blanche Moyse Chorale), Cantata BWV 153 (Victoria Bach Festival), Rossini’s Petite Messe Solonnelle (Dalton Chorale), works by Purcell and G.F. Handel in the Festival Musique en l’Ile in Paris, works by Heinrich Schütz and Szarzynski (Early Music New York), John Cage’s 4’33” (MoMA), and a performance of excerpts from Nathan Davis’ dance opera Hagoromo with the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). As an ensemble artist, she appears with groups including True Concord, Boston Baroque (Director: Martin Pearlman), Exsultemus Period Ensemble, American Classical Orchestra, and Seraphic Fire.
Catherine Hedberg has also worked as Assistant Director at New England chapter of American Composers Forum (September 2003-June 2006); Coordinator at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City (January 2011-May 2015); Piano/Voice Teacher at various institues in Boston/NYC, including Brookwood School, School for Creative Arts, Music 101, Private studio (since September 2003); Bulletin producer at Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City (since January 2018); Technical Documentation & Training Specialist at Inari in Cambridge, Massachusetts (since May 2021). |
