Gottfried von der Goltz (Conductor, Violin)

Born: June 1, 1964 - Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany

The German conductor and violinist, Gottfried von der Goltz, received early training under his father Conrad von der Goltz, and later under Rami Shevelov in Hannover. He completed his studies at the Juilliard School in New York and with Rainer Kussmaul in Freiburg.

When he was only 21, with a secure place in the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg and a highly promising career as a 'modern' violinist before him, Gottfried von der Goltz decided to switch to a far less secure career as a Baroque violinist and member of the Freiburger Barockorchester. He has never been forced to regret that decision: as a soloist the great works of the 18th century and early 19th centuries are available to him and as artistic director of the Freiburger Barockorchester he can shape creatively the musical development of an outstanding ensemble. With his exceptional talent he is now one of the foremost international Baroque violinists.

Gottfried von der Goltz provides proof that while the playing of the period instruments from the 18th and early 19th centuries represents a formidable challenge, it can be mastered to create performances of great musical profundity with the highest technical mastery.

Gottfried von der Goltz is now also in demand as a teacher. Since 1997 he has been a Professor of Baroque Violin at the Würzburg Musikhochschule. In his work as artistic director of the Freiburger Barockorchester he concentrates on the great repertoire of the period dating from the time of J.S. Bach to the early romantic era.
