Bradley Garvin (Bass-Baritone)

Born: October 1964 - River Forest, Illinois, USA

The American bass-baritone, Bradley Garvin, obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Olivet Nazarene University and his Master of Music degree in Voice from the from the Indiana University. He is the winner of numeruous vocal competitions, including the Washington D.C. International Vocal Competition, George London Vocal Competition, Placido Domingo International Vocal Competition, and the William Matheus Sullivan Award.

Known for his rich powerful voice and commanding stage presence, Bradley Garvin is a growing presence in the world of opera. He has appeared most notably with The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Arizona Opera, Sarasota Opera, Calgary Opera, Montreal Opera, and Palm Beach Opera. His International credits include appearances on the Grand Sea Stage of Bregenz, Austria, the Hamburg Staatsopera, Conciertos di Colombia in Bogota, Conciertos di Guadalajara, Mexico, as well as appearing throughout Japan with the Metropolitan Opera Tour.

Bradley Garvin performs a wide range of vocally challenging and dramatic roles which include Hollaender in Der fliegende Hollaender, the title roles in both W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Scarpia in Tosca, Jochanaan in Salome, Escamillo in Georges Bizet's Carmen, the four villains in Les Contes d'Hoffrnan, Mephistopheles in Charles Gounod's Faust, and the duel roles of the Athlete and Animal Trainer in Alban Berg's Lulu.

In 2006-2007 Bradley Garvin sang the King in Aida in Houston, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Lyric Opera of Kansas City, and joined the roster of the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Jochanaan in Salome. 2008-2009 season found him performing Lulu with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Rigoletto's Monterone with Houston Grand Opera, and Jochanaan with Toledo Opera. The New York Times called him "magnetic" for his performance as the Animal Trainer and Acrobat in The Metropolitan Opera production of Lulu in the 2009-2010 season. He also returned as the King in Aida at the Bregenzer Festpiele, and performed the title role in Der fliegende Hollaender with the Madison Opera, where Opera News said, "Bass-baritone Bradley Garvin was at once noble and pathetic, and delivered a splendid account of the great monologue. His timbre is intrinsically masculine and beautiful. This is a good role for him. and it will be interesting to watch his growth in it." His engagements in the 2010-2011 season include performing Scarpia in the Boston Lyric Opera Tosca, and the Four Villians in Les Contes d'Hoffman with Florida Grand Opera. Throughout the year. The Metropolitan Opera has called him back to perform in multiple roles.

An advocate of contemporary opera, Bradley Garvin portrayed Prince Arjuna in Philip Glass' highly acclaimed Satyagraha with The Metropolitan Opera, prompting Variety to call his performance vocally impressive. His first Scarpia was with Minnesota Opera, and he has sung Strauss' prophet from Salome with both Opera Company of North Carolina and the Fort Worth Opera. He has sung Mephistopheles in Faust with the Opera di Colombia in Bogota, and the title role in Le nozze di Figaro with Dayton Opera.

As an experienced oratorio singer, Bradley Garvin has performed L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Baltimore Symphony, and George Frideric Handel's Messiah with the International Music Foundation. He has also performed Verdi's Requiem, J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244, and Haydn's Creation.

At the Met Bradley Garvin has sung more than 150 performances of 17 roles, including Marshal Berthier in War and Peace, Animal Trainer/Acrobat in Lulu, Wilhelm in The Ghosts of Versailles, Starveling in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Javelinot in Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites, and the Second Prisoner in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio (debut, 1993).

Recent performances include the Four Villains in Les Contes d’Hoffmann with Florida Grand Opera, Monterone in Rigoletto for his debut with the Dallas Opera, and Scarpia in Tosca with the Boston Lyric Opera. He has also sung the title role of Der Fliegende Holländer with the Madison Opera, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Scarpia with the Minnesota Opera, Jochanaan in Salome with Fort Worth Opera, Méphistophélès in Faust with the Toledo Opera, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro with Dayton Opera, and Colline in La Bohème and Don Giovanni with the Arizona Opera
