Zachary Devin (Tenor)

Born: September 1986 - Robinson, Illinois, USA

The American tenor and music teacher, Zachary K. Devin, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Performance Voice from Millikin University (2004-2008); his Master of Music degree in Music Performance Voice from Rice University (2008-2010); his Master of Arts degree in Music Performance Voice from the Royal Academy of Music in London (2010-2012). He will receive his Ph.D. in Vocal Pedagogy from the University of Kansas (since 2020; expected grdauation: 2023), where he served as a teaching assistant (August 2020-June 2023) in both the School of Music and the Speech, Language, and Hearing departments.

Zachary Devin’s voice has been praised as “superb, strong, and impassioned” by Opera Today. He is an active operatic performer. He was a young artist with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Nashville Opera, Dayton Opera, and the Brevard Music Academy. He made his professional debut in Budapest as Peter Quint in Benjamin Britten’s Turn of The Screw. After years of performing abroad, he returned to the USA, where he has appeared with The Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Nashville Opera, Dayton Opera, Salt Marsh Opera, Winter Opera Saint Louis, Union Avenue Opera, Gulf Shore Opera, Mid-Ohio Civic Opera, and The Southern Illinois Music Festival, among others. Some favorite roles include Peter Quint in B. Britten's Turn of the Screw, Rinnucio in Gianni Schicchi, Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Tamino in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, Cassio in Otello, Beppe in I Pagliacci, Satyavan in Savitri, Hugh in Hugh the Drover Jupiter in George Frideric Handel's Semele, Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore, and Charlie in Brigadoon.

Zachary Devin is also an avid concert performer. He has been a featured soloist for several major works, including J. Haydn's The Creation, G.F. Handel's Messiah, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, B. Britten's Serenade for Horn and Tenor, Carmina Burana, The Seven Last Words of Christ, and Stainer’s Crucifixion. He also has a passion for the music of J.S. Bach. He has performed numerous church cantatas and has appeared as a soloist with the Peoria Bach Festival, American Kantorei of St. Louis, and St. Johns Parish of Kansas City.

Zachary Devin taught applied voice at the University of Missouri Saint Louis (September 2018-June 2023), Ottawa University, Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri (September 2018-March 2020), and St. Charles Community College (September 2017-June 2023). He has also taught vocal and choral pedagogy courses, choral conducting, lyric diction, speech anatomy, and speech physics. At University of Kansas, he currently serves as Asistan Professor (since June 2013) and teaches applied voice, vocal pedagogy, and diction. As a researcher, he has presented at national and international conferences for associations such as the Voice Foundation, the National Association for Music Educators, and the Kansas Music Educators Association. His research interests include vocal fatigue in collegiate singers, vocal health, vocal warm-ups, vocal function exercises, and vocal pedagogy applications. He currently lives in Lawrence, Kansas.
