The German tenor, clarinetist and composer, Matthias Deger, received during his school days, clarinet, piano and organ lessons and studied clarinet and singing at the Bruckneruni in Linz. This was followed by a vocal ensemble studies with Anthony Rooley and Evelyn Tubb at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, as well as a master's degree in historical clarinets and chalumeaux with Ernst Schlader at the Hochschule für Alte Musik in Trossingen. Formative singing teachers were Andreas Lebeda, Kurt Widmer, Clemens Morgenthaler and Richard Levitt.
Matthias Deger works as a singer, clarinetist and composer alike. Baroque oratorios (from Carissimi to J.S. Bach) and Renaissance music form the stylistic focus of his vocal repertoire. As a soloist he joined u.a. with the Barockorchester L'arpa festante Münnnchen and recently sang the role of the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) at the Philharmonie in Berlin. He also sings in professional vocal ensembles such as Voces Suaves, La Pedrina (Director: Francesco Saverio Pedrini), Profeti della Quinta, Vars Musica, White Raven and La Cetra Barockorchester Basel (Director: Andrea Marcon).
In his compositions and improvisations, Matthias Deger often plays with folk music content, takes up the modal tonal language of earlier times or other cultures and develops a simple, extended modal style. He is also a film music composer with Universal Publishing Production Music and Warner Chappell. |
