The Canadian Canadian bass and music educator, Andrew Day, holds a Bachelor of Education and completed a Master of Arts in Music and Culture. His research and graduate work focused on music pedagogy and improvisation, specifically exploring how to facilitate improvised music for youth.
Andrew Day is a professional member of the bass section for the JUNO Award-winning Ottawa Bach Choir (Director: Lisette Canton). He has been part of the ensemble during significant milestones, including their recent 2024 and 2025 seasons. He has performed in high-profile concerts such as the Ottawa Bach Choir's "Flights of Angels" at the Ottawa Chamberfest (2024), featuring works by J.S. Bach, Bruckner, and Monteverdi. He has a deep-rooted history in the local music scene as a founding member of the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir (since its foundation in 1982 by Barbara Clark), an organization that has served as a pipeline for many of the region's professional vocalists.
Andrew Day served as the Artistic Director of the Cantata Singers of Ottawa, a premier choral ensemble known for its eclectic repertoire ranging from early music to contemporary Canadian works. During the late 2000's and 2010's, he was director of the Ottawa Children’s Choir (OCC). He has a significant legacy in music education, having directed vocal programs that received national acclaim. Under his leadership (2008 through 2017), vocal programs at the Centre d’excellence artistique de l’Ontario won six national championships and were multiple-time recipients of "Best Music Programme" designations from the Kiwanis Music Festival and the CBC (2008, 2012, and 2017). He has been a member of several local professional choirs and continues to be a mentor for emerging vocalists in the National Capital Region.
Andrew Day is noted for his versatility, performing everything from the rigorous polyphony of J.S. Bach to modern operatic and choral compositions. His work often bridges the gap between performance and pedagogy, contributing to the "scholarly and emotional approach" championed by the Ottawa Bach Choir. |
