Matthias Dähling (Counter-tenor)

Born: May 21, ____ - Hamburg, Germany

The German counter-tenor, Matthias Dähling, studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg viola (October 2015-July 2020) and singing under Mark Tucker (October 2016-July 2021), receiving multiple scholarships and awards throughout his academic career. Since 2016, he has studied with Ulla Groenewold in Hamburg and has taken master-classes with Michael Chance, Daniel Taylor, Felicity Lott, François Le Roux, Ian Partridge, Lynne Dawson, and Philippe Jaroussky. He graduated with Master of Music degree with distinction in Vocal Performance & Opera from the Royal College of Music in London (September 2021-July 2023), where he studied with Sally Burgess. He is a Samling Artist and alto recipient of the 2024 Salvat Beca Bach.

In 2021 Matthias Dähling gave his stage debut in a new production of Dmitri Shostakovich's The Nose at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich under baton of Vladimir Jurowski (October-November 2021). He returned to the Bayerische Staatsoper in May 2024 for a revival of the opera. As an ensemble singer, he regularly performs with groups like the Monteverdi Choir (April 2023-April 2024; Director: John Eliot Gardiner) and Balthasar-Neumann-Chor (Director: Thomas Hengelbrock).

Recent performances include a new production of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in Winterthur with the Lautten Compagney Berlin, conducted by Wolfgang Katschner. He has also performed at venues like the Laeiszhalle Hamburg with the Hamburger Knabenchor and Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg under Luiz de Godoy, and presented J.S. Bach cantatas at the Palau de la Música Catalana with the Bach Collegium Barcelona, directed by Pau Jorquera.

Matthias Dähling is committed to expanding the counter-tenor repertoire. He was a participant in the 2022-2023 'Wigmore Hall French Song Exchange' and has given recitals at the Wigmore Hall in London and the Salle Cortot in Paris. He is featured on several CD's, notably a first recording of rediscovered Georg Philipp Telemann cantatas with the Neumeyer Consort under Felix Koch's direction. He is currently based in London.
