The Swiss mezzo-soprano, Vanessa Beck-Hurst, studied Philosophy, Russian, Modern Greek and Musicology at the Faculty of Letters (Humanities), as well as the violin, before obtaining her Certificate for the teaching of music at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève. After a short stint at the French-speaking Swiss Television, during which she participated in a programme discussing discography and was a day-time announcer, she decided to dedicate herself entirely to music. She began her voice training with Nicole Rossier Maradan and was quickly granted admission to Katerina Begert's professional class at the Conservatoire de Lausanne. From there she transferred to Maria Diaconu's class within the Professional Classes at the Geneva Conservatory (now known as Haute Ecole de Musique). During her training, she took part in numerous courses and master-classes with Luisa Castellani in contemporary music, Alain Garichot, Esther De Bros, Jocelyne Dienst, Rita De Letteris, and Teresa Berganza. She is perfecting her training with Isabelle Henriquez and David Jones (New York).
Vanessa Beck-Hurst has sung under the direction of John Duxbury, V. Carrot, Herve Niquet, Evelino Pido, and has taken part in productions with the Mont-Blanc Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Orchestre de Chambre de Geneve. Her repertoire extends from Baroque music to that of the 20th century. She is active in contemporary music groups, and has participated in several creations and recordings, without limiting herself to classical singing, but also singing Greek and Gipsy folklore. She is currently a member of the Chorus of the Grand Théâtre de Genève. |
