Johann Löhner (Composer)

Born: November 21, 1645 - Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany
Died: April 2, 1705 - Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany

Johann Löhner was a German composer, organist and singer. He was the son of the married couple Johann Joachim Löhner (d 1650) and Anna Löhner, née Windhesel (d 1660), baptized as Protestant-Lutheran in Nuremberg and died in Nuremberg. The organist Georg Caspar Wecker, who did his work at St. Egidien, adopted Johann Löhner and instructed him musically. It is believed that he was organ player from 1665 in St. Sebald. Towards the end of 1670 he went to Bayreuth as a singer. From 1682 he was a regular hospital organist and from 1694 until his death he worked in St. Sebald as an organist. He composed over 300 songs and three operas. Song No. 352 in the Evangelischen Kirchengesangbuch bears witness to his work. In 1682 he published his most important work, the Auserlesene Kirch- und Tafel-Music.
