Yann Rolland (Counter-tenor)

Born: January 20, ____ - Ivry-sur-Seine, France

The French counter-tenor, Yann Rolland, studied as a boy singing in the Maîtrise de Radio France from 1992 to 1994; then at the CNR in Paris, at the Maîtrise de Paris from 1994 to 1998. He then studied sociology and stopped the music, until he finished his Master's degree at La Sorbonne.

In 2005, Yann Rolland began singing again, first as a baritone at the Conservatoire du XVIIIe arrondissement in Paris in the class of Michel Piquemal; then he joined in 2006 the professional training of the Maîtrise de Notre Dame in Paris, this time in counter-tenor voice. Since then, he has participated in many concerts and recordings in the Maîtrise de Notre Dame, as well as in master-classes, including with Howard Crook, N. Barker, Rinaldo Alessandrini, F. Leroux, etc.

Yann Rolland has participated in productions as a soloist, notably in April 2011 in the Mass in C minor (BWV 232) by J.S. Bach with Les Musiciens du Louvre (Director: Marc Minkowski), as well as in May 2011 as a role interlude title in the opera Giulio Cesare by George Frideric Handel conducted by Jean-Claude Malgoire; in 2010 and 2011 in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) at Notre Dame de Paris and Nisi Dominus by Antonio Vivaldi; and in the program of Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble in G.F. Handel and A. Vivaldi recitals, as well as a program of J.S. Bach-H. Purcell-Giovanni Battista Pergolesi ariass and duets.

Yann Rolland also performs in ensemble with a voice and choir, especially in the Concert Spirituel, and Les Musiciens du Louvre, or in Renaissance music ensembles, such as Vox Cantoris, Trio Musica Humana; in such operatic productions as The Carnival of Venice, King Arthur (conducted by H. Niquet), Platée (conducted by Marc Minkowski), as well as around the sacred repertoire, notably French music (Gilles, Campra, Charpentier, Bottle, Brossard, Certon), German (Mass in C minor (BWV 232), recorded in 2007, with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, conducted by John Nelson, Passions of J.S. Bach), Italian (Mass of Striggio, conducted by Hervé Niquet).

Yann Rolland has participated in numerous recordings, recently with Bouteiller's Requiem with Le Concert Spirituel, directed by H. Niquet, the Mass Ave Sanctissima Maria by Pierre Certon, with the ensemble Vox Cantoris, or motets and masses of romantic music German (Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Josef Rheinberger) with the Maîtrise de Notre Dame.

Yann Rolland continues this year (2014) his vocal training in the early music department of the Paris Conservatoire, including with Howard Crook, Jean Tubéry, Sebastien Marq. He is a member of Ensemble Pygmalion (Director: Raphaël Pichon). He currently lives in Paris, France.
