Margaret Kalil (Soprano)

Born: 1926 (?) - Monroe, Louisiana, USA
Died: March 14, 1991 - Montreal., Quebec, Canada

The American soprano, Margaret Kalil, graduated from Columbia University. She onbtained her Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School of Music in New York in the class of Hans Heinz (1956-1960). She sang the title role in of the Juilliard Opera Theater production of Strauss' Ariadne on Naxos (1958-1959), and she was in the Juilliard Chorus and Orchestra performances of Rossini's Stabat Mater and W.A. Mozart's Requiem. She was the Donna Anna in the Chautauqua Opera production of W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and appeared with Thomas Scherman and the Little Orchestra Society at Carnegie Hall. Later in 1959 she was one of the soloists in George Frideric Handel's St. John Passion with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Leonard Bernstein. She continued her studies at the University of Milan in Italy.

Margaret Kalil gave her Town Hall debut recital in December 1963. She was a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera from 1965 to 1973. Among her roles there: Celestial Voice in Don Carlo (July 1965); Unborn in Die Frau ohne Schatten (October 1966, February 1969, January 1971); Priestess in Aida (November 1970); Serving Woman in Elektra (November 1970, February 1971); Donna Anna in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni (February-April 1973). She also sang with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras. She was a voice teacher at McGill University in Montreal.

Margaret Kalil died of pulmonary disease on March 14, 1991 at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. She was 66 years old and lived in Montreal. She was survived by three sisters: Frances Shashy of Ocala, Fla., and Dolores Nomey and Gloria Harrison of Monroe, Louisiana.
