Jenny Hou (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: March 11, 1984 - Jinan, China

The Chin ese mezzo-soprano, Jenny Hou (Zhenyi Hou), graduated from the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien (2007-2014) in the singing class of Professor Fr. Donner, Professor W. Zlateva and Professor M. Klaushofer. She also worked with Professor D. Lutz (art song), Professor R. Nickler (dramatic art) and Proessor C.U. Meier (musical interpretation). In 2013 she graduated with honours. She attended several master-classes held by Cecilia Bartoli and Silvana Bazzoni. In 2011, she won the third prize of the Second International Competition for song duos in Sofia, and the third prize and special prize at the International master courses competition of the Vienna Music Seminar.

While still a student (during 2007), Jenny Hou debuted in the role of Ramiro in W.A. Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera in the Schlosstheatar, Schönbrunn (January-April 2008) and Yihai Theater in Shanghai, China. In 2012 and 2013 she participated again in productions of the same theatre. Also in the role of Polinesso in George Frideric Handel's Ariodante (January-May 2012), as wel as the roles of Lazuli in Chabrier's L‘Étoile, (October 2012-June 2013) and Sorceress in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at Neue Studio Bühne Wien (May-June 2012)

Jenny Hou toured frequently as a soloist in cantata and oratorial works with the orchestra Collegium Dorotheum and Cantores Suaves chorus, conducted by Lucio Golino. In one of the great cathedrals of Vienna she has performed mezzo-soprano and alto solos from various oratorios, masses and cantatas by J.S. Bach, Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Markus-Passion attributed to Reinhard Keiser (actually by F.N. Brauns) and others.

In June-August 2013, Jenny Hou made her debut at the Salzburg Music Festival in Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Felix Mendelssohn. In May 2014, at the invitation of the festival Austrian Music Weeks in Sofia, she played Solo in The Song of the Earth (German:Das Lied von der Erde) by Gustav Mahler, co-operating with Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. Some of the orchestras she has co-operated with are Haydn Sinfonietta Wien Sinfonietta Baden etc. In April-July 2016, she debuted at the Landestheater Niederbayern in the role of Amneris in Verdi's Aida.

Since June 2017, Jenny Hou is Guest Professor at Vanke International Arts Academy in Shanghai, China. Since August 2018, she is an ensdemble member at Staatstheater Braunschweig. She married Guangyu Fan on January 5, 2012, and currently lives inVienna, Austria.
