Didier Chevalier (Bass-Baritone)

Born: France

The French bass-baritone, Didier Chevalier, studied singing at the Conservatoire de Vichy with Danielle Berteault-Fontanille. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris: singing with Lorraine Nubar and Régine Crespin master-class, early music with William Christie. He also studied Baroque music with Michel Laplénie, Gregory Reinhart & Max van Egmond.

In 1997, after his studies, Didier Chevalier began singing as a soloist at the Les Arts Florissants (Director: William Christie; 1985-1988) then with different Baroque formations such as Capriccio Stravagante, Sagittarius (Director: Michel Laplénie), Le Centre Baroque de Versailles or Ensemble Jacques Moderne (Director: Joël Suhubiette; 1999-2013), while deepening the choral music with Philippe Herreweghe in La Chapelle Royale. He has also toured and recorded under the direction of Gustav Leonhardt, René Jacobs, Marc Minkowski, H. Niquet, Christophe Coin et Laurence Equilbey.

At the same time, Didier Chevalier perfected his Lied and melody style, which he particularly loved with Gérard Souzay, Bernard Kruysen and Udo Reineman, and gave recitals with Patrick Dechorgnat. A special attraction for polyphony encourages him to sing with Mora Vocis, Antiphona, Ensemble Jacques Moderne and Doulce Mémoire and to create La Main Harmonique with Frédéric Bétous. Finally he performs the music of the 20 century and the contemporary works with Joël Suhubiette in Les Eléments since the creation of the group. He currently lives in Paris, France.
