Description:

The words and melody of the opening movement are those of the Hymn, “Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt.” (God so loved the world). Its author, Salomo Liscow or Liscovius, was born at Niemitsch, near Guben, in 1640. After graduating at Wittenberg, where he was crowned a poet, he was ordained pastor at Otterwisch in 1664, and in 1685 was appointed to a similar position at Wurzen. He died there in 1689. The Hymn was first published in his Christlichen Frauen-Zimmers geistliche Tugend-Spiege (Leipzig, 1675).
The melody was composed by Gottfried Vopelius and was attached to the Hymn in his Neu Leipziger Gesangbuch (Leipzig, 1682 [1681]).
J.S. Bach has not used the melody elsewhere. It is given neither by Erk nor the Choralgesange.
The words of the opening movement are the first stanza of the Hymn.

1. Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt,
Dass er uns seinen Sohn gegeben,
Wer sich im Glauben ihm ergibt,
Der soll dort ewig mit ihm leben.
Wer glaubt, dass Jesus ihm geboren,
Der bleibet ewig unverloren.
Und ist kein Leid, das den betrübt,
Den Gott und auch sein Jesus liebt.

2. Nun bin ich auch ein Glied der Welt
Und glaube fest und ohne Zweifel,
Dass mich mein Gott im Herzen hält
Und schützet wider alle Teufel.
Dass ich, zum Leben aufgenommen,
Nun der Verdammnis bin entkommen.
Und ist kein Leid, dass mich betrübt,
Weil mich mein Gott und Jesus liebt.

3. Hat mich der Satan so verführt,
Dass ich in Sünden bin gefallen,
Dass Gottes Zorn mich billig rührt (a)
Und Höllengluten auf mich wallen:
So kann ich doch beständig hoffen,
Mir stehet Gottes Himmel offen.
Und ist kein Leid, dass mich betrübt,
Weil mich mein Gott und Jesus liebt.

4. Ich habe zwar den Tod verschuld't
Zu liegen in der Höllen Rachen,
Doch hat mein Gott mit mir Geduld
Und will mich Sünder selig machen.
Will meine Seele nicht verderben,
Ich soll sein Paradies ererben.
Und ist kein Leid, das mich betrübt,
Weil mich mein Gott und Jesus liebt.

5. Kommt Kummer, Jammer, Kreuz und Not
Und wollen mich mit Macht ersticken:
Ich fürchte nicht den ärgsten Tod,
Gott will mich überall erquicken.
Mich kann das allergrößte Leiden
Von seinem Himmel nicht abscheiden.
Und ist kein Leid, das mich betrübt,
Weil mich mein Gott Und Jesus liebt.

6. Zwar Feuer, Wasser, Erd' und Luft
Sind wider mich mit ihren Klagen,
Ein jedes Gott zur Rache ruft
Und sind gesonnen, mich zu plagen.
Doch kann mich keines schädlich töten,
Gott hilft mir auch aus ihren Nöten.
Und ist kein Leid, das mich betrübt,
Weil mich mein Gott Und Jesus liebt.

7. Erschrecket mich auch das Gericht,
Vor welchem ich nicht kann bestehen,
Weil mein Gewissen selber spricht:
Ich soll zu den Verdammten gehen.
Doch wird mein Jesus mich nicht richten,
Sein Blut wird meine Sünde schlichten
Und ist kein Leid, das mich betrübt,
Weil mich mein Gott Und Jesus liebt.

8. Fällt endlich gar der Himmel ein
Und will die Erde mich nicht tragen,
So wird doch Gott mein Himmel sein
Und mir die Stelle nicht versagen.
Bei ihm in Ewigkeit zu bleiben,
Mich wird kein Feind von ihm vertreiben.
Und ist kein Leid, das mich betrübt,
Weil mich mein Gott Und Jesus liebt.

9. So bleib ich nun ganz unverletzt,
Weil Gottes Liebe mich bedecket,
Wenn gleich Tod, Teufel an mich setzt
Und mich der Höllen Schlund erschrecket.
Was grausam ist, das muss verschwinden,
