German Text (verses in bold print set by Bach)

English Translation

1. Herr Gott, nun sei gepreiset,
Wir sag'n dir großen Dank.
Du hast uns wohl gespeiset,
Gegeb'n ein'n guten Trank.
Dein' Mildigkeit zu merken
Und unsern Glaub'n zu stärken,
Dass du seist unser Gott.

1. O God in heaven we praise Thee
And yield Thee gratitude
For all Thy generous bounty,
For all our daily food,
For all the love showered on us,
For all the grace poured on us,
By Thee, our loving Lord.

2. Ob wir solch's hab'n genommen
Mit Lust und Übermaaß,
Dadurch wir möchten kommen
Vielleicht in deinen Hass.
So wollst du's uns aus Gnaden,
Herr, ja nicht lassen schaden
Durch Christum, deinen Sohn.

2. And if these gifts of plenty
Our appetites should tempt,
Should draw our service from Thee,
And bring us to contempt;
O still in mercy spare us,
Nor from Thy pity tear us,
Through Jesus Christ Thy Son.

3. Also wollst allzeit nähren,
Herr, unsre Seel' und Geist,
In Christo ganz bekehren
Und helfen allermeist,
Dass wir die Sünde meiden,
Stark sein in allem Leiden
Und leben ewiglich.

3. And as Thou hast our members,
Refresh also our soul,
Expel all vile distempers,
In Christ make us all whole;
So shall we, ill declining,
Our wills to Thine resigning,
Live ever in Thy sight.

4. O Vater aller Frommen!
Geheiligt werd' dein Nam'.
Lass dein Reich zu uns kommen.
Dein Wille mach' und zahm.
Gib Brot, vergib die Sünde.
Kein Arg's das Herz entzünde.
Lös' uns aus aller Not.
