Text for Cantata 82
Ich habe genung

Original German Text

English Translation

1. ARIA (Baß)

Ich habe genung,
ich habe den Heiland, das Hoffen der Frommen,
auf meine begierigen Arme genommen;
ich habe genung!
Ich hab ihn erblickt,
mein Glaube hat Jesum ans Herze gedrückt;
nun wünsch ich, noch heute mit Freuden
von hinnen zu scheiden.
Ich habe genung!

I have enough,
I have taken the Savior, the hope of the devout,
into my eager arms;
I have enough!
I have gazed upon him,
my faith has imprinted Jesus on my heart;
now, even today, I wish with joy
to depart from here.
I have enough!

I have enough.
My solace is but this alone
that Jesus be mine and I might be his own.
In faith I cling to him,
for I too see as Simeon did
the joy of the other life already.
Let us be drawn with this man!
Oh! that the Lord might deliver me
from my bodily chains!
Oh! were my departure but here,
with joy would I say, world, to you:
I have enough!

3. ARIA (Baß)

Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen,
fallet sanft und selig zu!
Welt, ich bleibe nicht mehr hier,
hab ich doch kein Teil an dir,
das der Seele könnte taugen.
Hier muß ich das Elend bauen,
aber dort, dort werd ich schauen
süßen Frieden, stille Ruh.

Be aslumber, you weary eyes,
fall gently and blissfully closed!
World, I no longer remain here,
indeed I find no portion in you
which could suit the soul.
Here I must sow misery,
but there, there I will behold
sweet peace, quiet rest.

4. REZITATIV (Baß)

Mein Gott! wenn kömmt das schöne: Nun!
da ich im Friede fahren werde
und in dem Sande kühler Erde
und dort bei dir im Schoße ruhn?
Der Abschied ist gemacht,
Welt, gute Nacht!

My God! when comes that lovely "Now!"
when I will journey into peace
and upon the sands of cool ground
there rest at your bosom?
My departure is set,
world, good night!

5. ARIA (Baß)

Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod,
ach! hätt er sich schon eingefunden.
Da entkomm ich aller Not,
die mich noch auf der Welt gebunden.

I look forward to my death,
oh, would that it be already present.
There I shall escape all the hardship
that still binds me to this world.
