1. CHOR |
|
Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes,
und die Feste verkündiget seiner Hände Werk.
Es ist keine Sprache noch Rede,
da man nicht ihre Stimme höre. |
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the firmament proclaims the work of his hands.
There is no language nor speaking
for no one can discern their voice. |

2. REZITATIV (Tenor) |
|
So läßt sich Gott nicht unbezeuget!
Natur und Gnade redt alle Menschen an:
dies alles hat ja Gott getan,
daß sich die Himmel regen
und Geist und Körper sich bewegen.
Gott selbst hat sich zu euch geneiget
und ruft durch Boten ohne Zahl:
auf, kommt zu meinem Liebesmahl! |
Thus God does not go unattested!
Nature and grace address all humanity:
all this God has yes done
that the heavens be stirred
and spirit and body set to motion.
God has inclined himself to you
and beckons through messengers without number:
arise, come to my feast of love! |

Hört, ihr Völker, Gottes Stimme,
eilt zu seinem Gnadenthron!
Aller Dinge Grund und Ende
ist sein eingeborner Sohn:
daß sich alles zu ihm wende. |
Hear God’s voice, you people,
hasten to his throne of grace!
Source and ending of all things
is his begotten Son,
that all might turn to him. |

Wer aber hört,
da sich der größte Haufen
zu andern Göttern kehrt?
Der ältste Götze eigner Lust
beherrscht der Menschen Brust.
Die Weisen brüten Torheit aus,
und Belial sitzt wohl in Gottes Haus,
weil auch die Christen selbst von Christo laufen. |
But who listens,
where great hordes
turn to other gods?
Ancient idols of selfish desire
dominate the human breast.
The wise propagate folly,
and the Devil is even present in God’s house,
while Christians themselves run from Christ. |

|
Fahr hin, abgöttische Zunft!
Sollt sich die Welt gleich verkehren,
will ich doch Christum verehren,
er ist das Licht der Vernunft. |
Be gone, idolatrous clan!
Should the world remain wayward,
I will still venerate Christ,
he is the light of reason. |
|
6. REZITATIV (Alt) |
|
Du hast uns, Herr, von allen Straßen
zu dir geruft
als wir im Finsternis der Heiden saßen,
und, wie das Licht die Luft belebet und erquickt,
uns auch erleuchtet und belebet,
ja mit dir selbst gespeiset und getränket
und deinen Geist geschenket,
der stets in unserm Geiste schwebet.
Drum sei dir dies Gebet demütigst zugeschickt: |
You have summoned us to you, Lord,
from every approach
as we sat in the darkness of the heathens,
and as the light invigorated and refreshed the air
we too were enlightened and invigorated,
yes, even dining and drinking with you,
and your Spirit was poured out
which ever wafts in our spirits.
Thus may this prayer be humbly presented to you: |

Es woll uns Gott genädig sein
und seinen Segen geben;
sein Antlitz uns mit hellem Schein
erleucht zum ewgen Leben,
daß wir erkennen seine Werk,
und was ihm lieb auf Erden,
und Jesus Christus Heil und Stärk
bekannt den Heiden werden
und sie zu Gott bekehren! |
God would be gracious unto us
and grant us his blessing;
his countenance shining bright
illumines us toward eternal life
that we might discern his works
and what is dear to him upon earth,
and Jesus Christ’s healing and strength
be made known to the heathens
and they be converted to God! |

Gott segne noch die treue Schar,
damit sie seine Ehre durch Glauben,
Liebe, Heiligkeit erweise und vermehre.
Sie ist der Himmel auf der Erden
und muß durch steten Streit
mit Haß und mit Gefahr
in dieser Welt gereinigt werden. |
God, bless yet the faithful band
that it might prove and propagate his glory
through faith, love and sanctity.
It is heaven upon the earth
and must, through constant strife
with hatred and with peril,
be cleansed of this world. |

|
Hasse nur, hasse mich recht,
feindlichs Geschlecht!
Christum gläubig zu umfassen,
will ich alle Freude lassen. |
Simply hate, truly hate me,
hostile generation!
To embrace Christ in faith
I will forgo all joys. |

11. REZITATIV (Alt) |
|
Ich fühle schon im Geist,
wie Christus mir der Liebe Süßigkeit erweist
und mich mit Manna speist,
damit sich unter uns allhier
die brüderliche Treue
stets stärke und verneue. |
I already sense in my spirit
how Christ manifests in me love’s sweetness
and nourishes me with manna,
thereby ever strengthening
and renewing brotherly allegiance
among all of us here. |

|
Liebt, ihr Christen, in der Tat!
Jesus stirbet für die Brüder,
und sie sterben für sich wieder,
weil er sich verbunden hat. |
Love, you Christians, in your deeds!
Jesus died for his brethren
and they die for each other as well,
for he made a covenant. |

|
So soll die Christenheit
die Liebe Gottes preisen
und sie an sich erweisen:
bis in die Ewigkeit
die Himmel frommer Seelen
Gott und sein Lob erzählen. |
So shall Christendom
praise the love of God
and prove it amongst themselves:
until in eternity
souls devout to heaven
declare God and his praise. |

14. CHORAL |
|
Es danke, Gott, und lobe dich
das Volk in guten Taten;
das Land bringt Frucht und bessert sich,
dein Wort ist wohlgeraten.
Uns segne Vater und der Sohn,
uns segne Gott, der Heilge Geist,
dem alle Welt die Ehre tu,
für ihm sich fürchte allermeist
und sprech von Herzen: Amen. |
The people thank and praise you God,
in good deeds;
the land brings forth fruit and flourishes,
your word is well advised.
Bless us Father and the Son,
and bless us God the Holy Spirit,
whom all the world does honor,
fear him above all things
and speak from the heart: Amen. |
