Text for Cantata 74

Original German Text

English Translation

1. CHOR

Whoever loves me will keep my words,
and my Father will love him,
and we will come unto him
and make a dwelling with him.

2. ARIA (Sopran)

Komm, komm, mein Herze steht dir offen,
ach, laß es deine Wohnung sein!
Ich liebe dich, so muß ich hoffen:
dein Wort trat itzo bei mir ein;
denn wer dich sucht, fürcht', liebt und ehret,
dem ist der Vater zugetan.
Ich zweifle nicht, ich bin erhöret,
daß ich mich dein getrösten kann.

Come, come, my heart stands open before you,
ah, let it be your dwelling place!
I love you, so I must hope:
that your word now enters me;
for whoever seeks, fears, loves and reveres,
to him the Father is dedicated.
I doubt not, I have been answered,
that I can console myself in you.

3. REZITATIV (Alt)

The dwelling place is prepared.
You find a heart devoted to you alone,
thus let me not experience
that you consider leaving me.
Let that nevermore, oh, nevermore occur for me!

I go forth and will return to you.
If you loved me
then you would be glad.

5. ARIA (Tenor)

Kommt, eilet, stimmet Sait und Lieder
in muntern und erfreuten Ton.
Geht er gleich weg, so kömmt er wieder,
der hochgelobte Gottessohn.
Der Satan wird indes versuchen,
den Deinigen gar sehr zu fluchen.
Er ist mir hinderlich,
so glaub ich, Herr, an dich.

Come, hasten, strings and songs intone
with merry and gladsome tones.
Though he suddenly leaves, still will he return,
this highly beloved Son of God.
Satan will meanwhile attempt
to curse completely what is yours.
He is to me a hindrance,
thus I believe, Lord, in you.

6. REZITATIV (Baß)

Es ist nichts Verdammliches an denen,
die in Christo Jesu sind.

There is no condemnation for those
who are in Christ Jesus.

7. ARIA (Alt)

Nichts kann mich erretten
von höllischen Ketten
als, Jesu, dein Blut!
Dein Leiden, dein Sterben
macht mich ja zum Erben:
ich lache der Wut.

Nothing can save me
from the hellish chains
but, Jesus, your blood!
Your passion, your dying
make me, yes, an heir:
I laugh at wrath.

8. CHORAL

Kein Menschenkind hier auf der Erd
ist dieser edlen Gabe wert,
bei uns ist kein Verdienen;

No child of humanity here upon earth
is worthy of this noble gift,
none among us has earned it;
nothing else is valid here but love and grace
which Christ has earned for us
by atonement and reconciliation.
